None More Black (Part 3 & 4)

[July 7. 1925] (FoundryVTT Session, June 17. 19:00 / June 21. 19:30)

The investigators followed a trail of evidence to an abandoned factory in East Providence. But they found that the lights… were on…

The Investigators

  • Dr. Evelyn Winters
  • Rosalie McDoughan
  • Frederick McCraken
  • Augustus Thaddeus Johnson III

Report

After lying in wait for a while, Fred and Evelyn decided to circle around the property hoping to find a way to covertly enter it. They managed to avoid the sole factory dweller that came out for a patrol around the buildings. Instead of sneaking into a building they decided to ambush and question one the next guard passing by. The ambush went a bit too well, as Fred's knocked the guard unconscious with a single blow.

A quick first aid treatment later he woke up, albeit heavily dazed. The interrogation was brief and the guy was mostly cooperative in light of the gun on his face, but he was constantly losing focus looking at the sky. The whole operation seemed to be run by a Mr. Dover, who “sees everything” and can “make you see things beyond your wildest dreams”. He described a weird procedure of hosing someone with water to obtain the black, but was growing increasingly panicked with every bit of information he revealed. Finally, he was tied up and the investigators retreated to find more information on Mr. Dover.

Using their various contacts they found that that Jacob Dover had purchased the Slaughterhouse quite recently. He was born in Rhode Island, but grew up out of the country and had just returned 2 years prior. Apparently, his mother had died in a boating accident while saving him from drowning, and his father sold the company he had inherited to go on extended travels a year later. The police had looked into Dover for buying some amount of pharmaceutical grade alcohol, but he had the required license. Brighton was able to find Dover's address and Augustus promptly sent his trusty P.I. to stake it out.

Next afternoon, the investigators met at the Colonial to finalize their plans to deal with Dover, but before they could leave, the Irish Mafia paid them a visit. The two boys that fell from the sky had been sent to rough up the Black dealer, but they hadn't reported back before heading to Dover. The Irish enforcer, O'Shea, couldn't find what their destinations was and several clues led him to Fred, who had been spotted in relevant locations. After a bit of a stand-off, Dr. Winters convinced O'Shea to cooperate in clearing out the drug lab and dealing with Dover before he can make his escape.

James McLeroy stayed with the group to keep an eye on their Dover investigation, while O'Shea gathered an “extermination team” to take care of the meat factory. Dover's apartment was underwhelming to say the least. A one-room in a run-down worker's residence about two miles from the factory. After learning from the P.I. that Dover likely wasn't home the group went and broke into his room. One of Dover's guards living across didn't take kindly to that and threatened them with a gun, but Fred bluffed his way close to him and knocked him down. The guard didn't have much information to share. Rosalie however found some books under the bed and spotted a gargoyle-like creature watching the scene unfold before suddenly disappearing.

James insisted on informing his boss, so they all retreated to the nearby “CHECK LATER” speak-easy. While the guys hung at the bar Evelyn and Rosalie studied the two diaries and uncovered some details of the magics that were in play. Soon after the Mobsters arrived to put an end to all this and the investigators joined to watch the attack from afar.

Just as the Irish started their assault, two nightgaunts snatched Evelyn out of the car and brought her into the factory. A somewhat aloof Jacob Dover welcomed her and was happy to use her as a hostage, thinking she belonged to the Mob. Augustus and Fred joined the attack to make sure she gets saved. The fight itself was short, as Tommy-guns made quick work of most of the armed junkies Dover had under his employ. Dover's call to bargain with O'Shea ended with a bullet through his chest, but something was wrong with the black blood that started to gush out. The nightgaunts, now free of their master, dropped Evelyn and soon fled the building. Evelyn herself acted quickly and tried to dissolve the black blood with a nearby water hose.

But it wasn't enough, a mass of pitch black ooze congealed around a pile of old bones that had been left in the stunning pen. Despite being showered in bullets the thing slowly crept towards the attackers and gored one of them with a tentacle wielding a cow skull like a weapon. As everyone started to flee, Evelyn showered the black mass with water causing some damage before running away as well. Once outside, the investigators fled towards the small river just east of the factory, as the black mass slowly dragged it bones along the ground in pursuit. It initially stopped when at the river bank, but after being taunted by several more salves of machine gun fire it attempted to jump over the stream. Some of its tentacles reached the other side, but its main body landed in the stream and it started to dissolve while trying to pull itself out of the water. Left behind was just a pile of wet old bones, soon drifting towards Narragansett bay…
